Put in at Coeyman's Landing this morning in the rain.
There's a narrow land connection between South Schodack Island (the new name is Castleton Island) and Houghtaling Island. It's just below marker 188 on the eastern shore. I went to see if you could carry across so you could get to the habitat on the other side. There's no carry, but there is a water passage about as wide as a sidewalk. I couldn't get far because of fallen logs, etc., but I bet it's possible to get through there.
Struggling through narrow passages with 8 foot oars makes me think about getting the longish "guide boat paddle" that was standard equipment on these boats 100 years ago. Maybe a kayak paddle would be the best thing for this situation.
